Gerald Hirsch started Custom House Wine Merchants, our brokerage company preceding Heritage Imports, in the winter of 1980 when he left the distribution world. Mr. Hirsch was approached by the producers of Bricco Riella seeking US representation and he agreed to broker the brand for Illinois and surrounding Midwest states. Custom House Wine Merchants created direct relationships with several Italian suppliers, most prominently Stefano Farina and Le Bocce. Naturally, all brands were distributed by Heritage Wine Cellars, Ltd.
In the mid nineties the Heritage Wine Cellars team successfully placed Bricco Riella on the national wine list of Biaggi’s Italian Restaurants which marked the moment that Heritage Imports needed to distribute nationwide.
Mr. Hirsch was very fond of German wines. In addition to the estates brands that were distributed thru our distribution company he was looking to create a brand that ensured continuity and steady availability. Mr. Hirsch selected producers that guaranteed quality and accessibility; he designed the label and named the brand Hirschbach.
Over the past thirty plus years Heritage Imports not only maintained all of our relationships; we have formed many new ones. We strive to meet and exceed the expectations of our suppliers and the needs of our domestic distributor partners.
