2018 ANNABELLE’S ROSÉ
“August 2015 heralded the arrival of our first grandchild, Annabelle, and the purchase of a new vineyard alongside her home. As a proud grandfather, it was my honour to name the site and wine after her. Following on from the wonderful success of the inaugural 2017 Annabelle’s Rosé, I invite you to share in a glass of this delicious 2018 Rosé and to contemplate my predicament... Annabelle now has a baby sister, Alexandra, and a cousin, Florence!
Peter Barry, Second Generation Family Winemaker.
Winemaking Notes
In the glass this wine shows a pale pink hue. The nose opens with lifted notes of fresh red summer fruits and rose flo-rals. The palate displays a generous burst of raspberry flavour with lashings of florals and a touch of savoury spice. A refreshing line of acidity complements the red berry flavours. The wine finishes with savoury spice and a fine, chalky texture. A moreish Rosé to be enjoyed now, but will reward cellaring for five years.
2018 JIM BARRY ASSYRTIKO
“I first tasted Assyrtiko in August 2006 while on holiday with my wife Sue on the Greek island of Santorini, birth-place of the Assyrtiko grape variety. The crisp, acidic qualities reminded me of our Clare Valley Rieslings and yet it was a flavour I had not experienced before. Intrigued with this newfound variety, I began the process of importing cuttings into Australia through quarantine. In August 2012 we planted Australia’s first Assyrtiko at our Lodge Hill Vineyard, a special and unique site treasured by my family and suited to this variety. Our Assyrtiko journey has been fascinating and has enabled us to produce a wine which, I believe, is a true expression of the variety. I hope you find the flavours as interesting as I did in 2006.” - Peter Barry, Third Generation Family Winemaker.
Winemaking Notes
Clear, palest straw colour in the glass. The wine opens with citrus blossom and Meyer Lemon aromas combined with honeydew melon and baking spice. A textural and well weighted wine with great concentration. Lemon and melon flavours with a hint of flint and a saline edge. A great line of crisp acidity, finishing with a fine talc like finish. Super refreshing, a great match for fresh Australian Seafood.
2016 BRICKMASON RED Lodi - Mokelumne River AVA
BLENDING PHILOSOPHY
With an arsenal of 16 Zinfandel vineyards, we chose two that expressed the broad range of the varietal. In an effort to bring more structure and dimension to the blend, we turned to our Syrah, Petite Sirah, and Cabernet Sauvignon blocks. The combination of these four varietals made for a delicious wine that was truly emblematic of the entire Klinker Brick portfolio.
VINEYARD HIGHLIGHTS
Costa Vineyard, Young Block (1987) -The Costa Vineyard, Old Block, is a core vineyard in our Klinker Brick Old Vine Zinfandel program. Realizing how special this site is for our flagship Zinfandel, we planted a new block of head trained Zinfandel adjacent to the old vineyard.
Burney Mettler Vineyard (1962) - This vineyard is a 55-year-old Zinfandel block on a California Sprawl trellis system. It’s planted on Freedom rootstock and averages around 3.5 to 4 tons per acre.
Farrah Vineyard (1989) - Originating from our estate in the Central Mokelumne sub AVA , the Syrah vineyard was made famous as the first 90 + rated wine out of Lodi. Sustainably farmed and handpicked, this vineyard has proven itself time after time as one of the best Syrahs produced within the Mokelumne River AVA.
WINEMAKING
The blend started by barrel sampling through 16 different lots of Zinfandel and choosing two that were exemplary of the varietal and vintage. The Costa Zin was selected for its acidity, red fruit and spicy pepper with an elegant finish. The Burney Mettler was the opposite - big dark fruit with firm tannins and bold structure. These wines were then blended equally. In the cellar, we added our barrel fermented Farrah Syrah to bring additional depth and toasty vanilla aromas. We then incorporated Cabernet, which encouraged the reemergence of dark fruits and round tannins. Finally, we added Petite Sirah to enhance color and the structural integrity of the blend as well as give the wine aromas of blueberries with a hint of licorice. The final blend consists of 80% Zinfandel, 10% Syrah, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Petite Sirah.
2017 Grower Collection Chardonnay, Calesa Vineyard, Petaluma Gap
Exposed to the fog and wind that funnel through the Petaluma Gap, Calesa is a cool-climate vineyard where Chardonnay ripens slowly, developing pure, vibrant flavors and ideal acidity. Farmed by acclaimed grower Oscar Renteria in shallow, gravelly loam soils, our prized hillside blocks at Calesa feature several exceptional clones of Chardonnay. In addition to producing naturally low yields, this diversity of clonal material results in a complex and layered wine with beautiful notes of citrus, tropical fruit and spice.
TASTING NOTES
The 2017 growing season yielded a radiant expression of Chardonnay at Calesa Vineyard, with inviting aromas of Meyer lemon, orange zest and hints of tropical flowers. On the palate, luxurious layers of brioche, melted butter and baking spices add depth and complexity to flavors of lemon drop, lychee and apricot, with fine-tuned acidity and subtle hints of smoke and sweet oak carrying through to a long, satisfying finish.
2017 Grower Collection Pinot Noir, Dutton Ranch, Russian River Valley
In 1967, legendary grower Warren Dutton planted his first vineyard, and helped to establish Russian River Valley as one of the world’s great appellations for Pinot Noir. Today, his sons, Steve and Joe, carry on Warren’s legacy and have established Dutton Ranch as one of the region’s preeminent vineyards. This wine is made using grapes from some of the most prized sections of Pinot Noir at Dutton Ranch. Nestled in the cool, foggy hills above the Russian River Valley, the result is a wine with remarkable depth and concentration.
TASTING NOTES
This rich and expressive Pinot Noir begins with aromas of currant, crème de cassis, and dark cherry, followed by subtle notes of anise, clove, mocha and rose petals. On the palate, silky tannins add length and polish to flavors of wild berry and pomegranate, with hints of white pepper and nutmeg providing nuance to the lingering finish.
